Re: 1965 Jack
The'65 JG book is silent on when the transition from Type 1 to Type 2 jack happened and only recites the Type 3 jack came into production 'around' VIN number 20000. Noland Adams recites 'jack history' in his Vol 2 restoration book in the 1963 section. The text skips around so much that you get a headache reading what he has to say and most throw up their hands because they do NOT find a clear delineation between types 1, 2 and 3!!!
BUT, one thing that also changed with the transition from Type 1 to Type 2 was the length of the lead screw's hex nut. That issue Noland DOES resolve citing the change was made on AIM date 3/22/65 (about the time VIN 15000 was built). So, you'd expect it took some time from the AIM change to get inventory onto the line placing the changeover in the April/May production timeframe (depending on Type 1 inventory on hand at St. Louis).
Bottom line, the Type 2 jack had SUCH a short life (a couple of months?) and it's so hard to exactly say when it really was used vs. Type 1 and Type 3, that I wonder why we really talk about it...
My take is anything built before April of '65 probably came with a Type 1 jack. Between April and May, I 'could' see either a Type 1 or Type 2. In June and later, I just might see any of the three types with the probablity being higher of seeing a Type 2 or Type 3....- Top
