I got got my battery from restorstion battery R89S Nice part.Now I open my NCRS book page 26 and to see I'm getteing points off for a none tar top but the current reproduction R89W big block are undectectable when did they get a tar top?Also there is no talk about date on battery. Make a obvious decduction for this configuration. MAN LAW one takes a hit we all take a hit.

I don't know where it says that the Delco R89S was a tar top battery. However, if it does say that somewhere, it's totally incorrect. The Delco R89S battery was NOT a tar top battery. For one thing, it's a side terminal only battery. I don't know of any side terminal only battery EVER made that was a tar top.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

You do not mention the year JG, but I presume it is the 1970-72. The manual is addressing the visibility of cells beneath the smooth-top 89S reproduction battery vs. the wrinkle-top 89W.
From the manual:
Current reproduction batteries for the R89W are undetectable from original; however, R89S reproductions are molded from plastic while the originals were molded from rubber. The separators on the underside of the top of the reproduction R 89S batteries telegraph their location through the top. Original batteries do not have depressions where the separators are molded to the top. Make a deduction for this obvious configuration difference.Dick Whittington- Top
