        Addendum

The above assumes that the car is not an L-88 or ZL-1. They used a different starter.

Anyway, the 1108400 starter is a high torque starter with cast iron nose. It's designed for use with 168 tooth (i.e. 14")flywheels. Any high torque starter with the proper cast iron nose will be 100% functional for your application, though. Aside from "numbers", you don't need the 1108400.

By the way, the 1108400 is a fairly difficult starter to find, especially with correct dates for your car.

            Frank-----

GM #1108418 was used for 1971-72 applications as far as Corvettes go. However, it was used for other Chevrolet applications beginning with the 1968 model year and through, at least, the 1975 model year. It is identical to the 1108400 in every respect that I can find; I have no idea why there were 2 different part numbers.

There is absolutely no reason that I can find that the 1108418 could not have been used for Corvette applications as an alternate to the 1108400. However, I don't think that it's recognized as original for 1969.

Yes, an 1108418 could be dated 8/68. The starter was being produced at that time.

Is it possible that it could be original to a 1969 L-68? I'd say it's VERY possible. I don't think that it's recognized as original for 1968-69, but I see absolutely no reason why it could not have been used in PRODUCTION alternately with the 1108400. As I mentioned above, as far as I can tell, the 2 starters are absolutely functionally identical.

                  Mark-----

No, it did not originally have an aluminum nose. There may be starters out there now that have a frame with the number 1108418 and an aluminum nose, but they didn't originally have that nose. The nose used for the 1108418 starter was GM #1965721. This was a cast iron nose using offset, "long" starter mounting bolts.
