    C2/'64 Hood Support Bolts

Two questions regarding the four bolts on my late '64's hood support bracket:

    1) The JM (third edition) indicates these bolts should have a headmark with an anchor and a large "T" on the lower half of the recessed head of the bolt. Mine, have no anchor or "T" but, instead, have a small dimple in the center with an "E" to the side of the dimple. All four bolts match and appear to be original. Are these correct? Were there changes in the fourth edition of the JM to include this additional head mark?

    2) What was the finish on these four bolts? Cadmium? Black phosphate?

    Thanks

    Gary -

    1) I think the E with the dimple is a "heat treated" screw and was not typically used originally in the attachment of the hood support. We'll see what other's opinons are I'm sure. Don't know about changes in the 64 TIM&JG.

If you refer to the 64 Corvette AIM, SECT 11-13, SHEET B7.00 you will find SCREW ASM 9409107 that attaches the top of the SUPPORT ASM to the HOOD and BOLT ASM 3797168 that attaches the bottom of the SUPPORT ASM to the INNER FENDER. As noted these are 2 different parts. From my experience, SCREW ASM 9409107 is typically a 7/16" with an anchor headmark 1/4x20 flat end screw with a floating ring washer and the BOLT ASM 3797168 is typically a 3/8" with the anchor above the T headmark 1/4x20 cone point screw with a floating ring washer. Many time you will find the BOLT ASM 3797168 in all 4 locations since it works and the cone point bolt isn't long enought to poke thru the hood and so this bolt could have been instaaled in all 4 locations at the factory but most original cars I have seen have the 2 different parts.

    2) The finsih was most likely zinc, but cadmium could have been an optional finish as many GM specs indicate zinc or cadmium .

      Pete:

Thanks for your comments..... My "original" bolts are clearly unusual - I haven't found a similar bolt anywhere else on the car as of yet....

        Garry,
Do a search on "C2 Hood Support" on the most recent past posts also, goog reading.

If I remember correctly, you have a fairly late production '64 also...... What do the bolts on your hood support look like.....?

            Garry,
            When I asked the same question here is what Michael Hanson wrote;

While the assy manual does indeed call for a 9409107 for the upper hood support screws, in reality, they were actually the same 3797168 screw assy's that was supposed to be used in the lower end of the support. All four would be the same anchor head zincad plated screw with washer and a unique size (3/8") hex head.

Hint.... if you need a few of these 3797168's, and you happen to have the inside lower windshield mldg removed, you will find several securing the dash panel under the mldg. The original zincad plating will likely be perfect. (I won't tell anyone that you have a few incorrect bolts holding your dash panel in place)

My car is a March build and all four screws are now anchor head . .

            Good Luck

Garry, here are my orig. early 64 (Nov 63 build) Anchor bolts. This is my first attempt to attach a picture, hope it works. Jim
