    Battery Toppers

I was just wondering how theses battery toppers do in judging? Do they get any points or for having them or are they a waste of money?

    Re: Battery Toppers

I observed a couple of Judges and they could not tell unless they got close.

Although I have not had my car judged, I like the idea that at least at a glance it looks correct. On a '62 the battery is so hidden that the battery is not extremely noticeable.

If your using a sealed Delco battery and have removed the stickers from the sides judges will ask to see the Delco sticker under the "Topper" in order to receive the standard 50% deduct for a service replacement battery. IMO it's a waste of time on the judging field.

Although I have yet to see one, I suspect they would be discovered by C3 judges since we have to look at the bottom of the compartment to judge the hold down clamp and bolt. As Brian mentions, "Delco" has to be seen to give one-half credit.

          Re: Battery Toppers

Last year after calling a well know reproduction Co.of R-59 Batteries for my 67 & not getting back the courtesy of a return ph. call ---I gave up & ordered a topper for my car which I used along with a new 750 amp Delco Battery I purchased at the auto parts store. Not cheap!!!----& the gentleman also suggested I get the post extenders so I would have a good connection on my cables.-----Nice idea----but they don't work----the car cranked over like it was a 8 year old battery in Alaska.I removed the post extenders & there was still pleny of bite for the cables to connect. The car turns over like a champ now.So the decision is yours take the repro battery route @ $150.00 plus or the topper route at about $60.00.It didn't matter much to me as my car had already been Flight Judged, but the toppers are a real close 2nd.
