Roy,

As you know I am sure, the one on the left is correct for a 56 or early 57. You can tell it is correct from the rounded rivets vs the flat ones on the right.

Do I win?

I think to put"C-1 gas cap" in the title and then not identify specifically which year you are talking about is just as misleading as some of the things that are criticized in the judging manuals. If you're going to include pictures and quizzes as you do (and I appreciate that) you need to be much more specific as to what you are showing--otherwise you are adding to, rather than eliminating, the confusion.
