I am restoring my 69 427 390 hp coupe. I will have to replace the windshield frame as it is rusted beyond repair. I took pictures of the removal of the tag in case someone later would question it. I was reading another members comment about incorrect rivets that were used on a vin tag. I am restoring this car in an attempt to top flight it, and am concerned about using incorrect rivets. Could someone tell me who sells the correct ones, so I dont make a costly error? Thanks, Mark

Re: vin tag rivets
Mark-----
The VIN tag rivets for 1967-82 Corvettes were a special "rosette" rivet. This design uses a slightly "scalloped" perimeter of the rivet head. Otherwise, they are a normal, aluminum pop rivet. I have seen these rivets for sale on eBay quite regularly.
Contrary to what is believed by some, I know of no law which makes it illegal to possess or sell these rivets.
Also, bear in mind that the re-affixation of a VIN tag may be contrary to the laws of your state. For some states, including California, an original VIN tag may be re-affixed, but it must be done under the approval and supervision of the DMV.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
The Rosetter Rivets are steel and can be found from time to time on Ebay as Rosette Rivets. These were also used in some body applications on some mid years from my understanding. (these are POP rivets and can be installed with a simple hand tool)

Re: vin tag rivets
They are sold on ebay out of O-Canada. I have not seen any for a while. Paragon might have them also, not sure about that. You would have to check. I have seen them around though. Hemmings motor news probably has them listed somewhere. Should not be too hard to find. Save the heads of your old ones for comparison or in case you have to modify them slightly. Terry- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
Wow, what a price tag?? Figures though.... If you look around you might find them cheaper. But, sometimes they have you over a barrel. Hopefully, you get a good deal on something else. Doing it right means a lot also. Take care, Terry- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
Doesn't suprise me. I have had my arms and legs pulled off like a bug looking for the right parts. I hate that feeling. But, finding the right part is sometimes hard. Finding a mint 68 center bezel. There are a lot of broken ones out there. Oh well, I am nearly done with my car. Thank goodness, Terry- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
I know the feeling Terry. I redid a '68 sometime in the '80's. I took a nice '69 bezel and with a dremel tool removed all the grain. Hand sanded the grind marks off. There were not a lot of C-3 parts for sale in the mid '80'sDick Whittington- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
Mark,
I would check first with Police Department, Local, Sheriff or State.
Then you could grind the bottom of the rivets enough to remove and when re installing tag with old rivets, Epoxy them on the underside of mounting bar.
Cheaper than a "C" note.- Top

Re: vin tag rivets
I would think that if you were having the police supervise the change, they would have the correct roset rivets themselves. Or at least have a source. I believe these were fairly common among different cars for the sole purpose of being different than what the public could get to reduce VIN swapping by thieves.
I mean, the police wouldn't use a regular pop rivet. That would make their own work suspicious on all subsequent inspections.- Top
