    Shot Blasting C1 1959 283 Engine Block

My engine builder wants to put my block in an oven at about 550 degrees and then shot blast it. What does this process do to broach marks? Thanks in advance for your input. Jimmy

Unless he puts something over them to protect them, it's bye-bye broaches

Dick, Will the thermal cleaning hurt anything?

Others may chime in, but I cannot see where it would hurt anything. I think that a heavy pad of tape over the pad would preserve the surface

Bolt a cover over the pad

I would not trust anything else to cover the pad. Should not be hard to make a shield of some kind that could be bolted to the block to cover the pad area. Dont trust anyone with your pad! Phil 8063

Ditto on the bolt on cover. Easy to make and attach to holes (where the water pump isn't using the holes).

              Cover it...

Mine is at the machine shop as we speak. Get 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 angle iron. cut 4" length and drill hole to bolt to upper water pump hole. Might have to grind the radius a bit to get it to fit tight. I will be getting my block back in about 2 wks. I will let you know.

Go to a stone munoument place where they etch stones with sand. They can give you a scrap piece of adhesive backed rubber to cover your "pad". They do this every day on expensive stones.

                  Re: Cover it...

Just got mine back after this process. Covered the pad with angle iron as Jim describes, no problem.
