I need to replace my heater core, clock, odometer, dash speakers and dash pad on my 70coupe. Should I take one section at a time apart or do it all togheter?
I am also told the oil guage has a live copper oil line. Any help or tips are appriciated.
Re: bad finger---all at the same time--just did my
I would do all at the same time. Be careful with the center guage cluster. They are nortorious for breaking in the narrow section. Search the archives and there are detailed instructions on how to replace the heater core. The oil line, if original, is plastic. Just remove if from the guage. Not a big deal, just time consuming. When you replace the dash pads, do not over tighten the top screws. They will pull the inserts though the pads. Sometimes you will find the side screws in the guage cluster are stripped. If so, just fill the holes with epoxy, let harden, and then redrill the holes using a bit several sizes smaller than the screw.
To replace the heater core, you have to remove the right dash panel & center instrument cluster. At that point, you might as well continue to replace the remaining dash parts "while you're there."
I was in the same boat as you. I was just going to replace the heater core on my '68, & I ended up restoring my original radio & all of my gauges, & replacing the upper & left dash pads which were in worse shape than I thought.
It's also a good time to check all grommets for air leaks, plug up any air infiltration from the engine bay & check all of your heater vacuum hoses. I also put down a little extra foil insulation under the carpet up to the firewall & around the trans tunnel.
Be careful, "while you're there" can get expensive.
