I met some guys in Texas looking to buy a Vette, I received an enmail asking what they could do to their 1974 LS4 to get to 400-500 HP. All my BB stuff is 69 back and I am not familiar with the heads on the 74. Any suggestions to get the HP up? The shop in Italt is Legendary Route 66 Store www.routeus66.it. Also What is 56L paint?? I have a picture of the trim tag but my book does not jive. These guys are restorers and two are car designers, Giugiaro and Castagna.

56L is bright yellow the same as 956.

"56" was bright yellow in '75-'76, and metallic gold in '82.

Are they wanting to build the engine themselves or have someone else build it?

They would probably be better off, more assured of the outcome, if they had a performance engine builder do the engine. Carbone Racing in Tulsa is one such builder, lots of experience with high performance BBC engines.

Thes guys are in northern Italy I think they want to build it themselves. From their discussion it seems that they have the mechanical savy but not the source for parts or know exactly what to build. I suggested they up the compression to 10:1 or so abd use a 390 HP cam, allum intake with a 600 cfm Holly and headers. I am not sure what heads were used on a 74, ate they the same as the 69's? The gas over there is about 90 octane. RDR

If they want a drivable real 500 HP they should look at a supercharger with EFI. They can run lower compression, have very nice street manners, lots of torque with stock heads and cam. The end cost would probably be about the same and have more real power.

I am not talking about a stick through the hood 671 with two carbs and a scoop on top, I am talking about a modern street charger that sits low on the engine and can probably be accommodated with a small bubble in the hood.
