The wipers on my '64 start moving the second the ignition is turned on even though the iper switch is off. They only move about one to two inches, up and down, up and down. When the switch is turned on, they move slightly faster in their strange little dance. I'm assuming the wiper motor needs to be rebuilt but would love to hear if someone has a quick fix. Thanks, David

Re: '64 Wipers Gone Wild
David,
Sounds like the poor thing can't park itself. You've probably noticed that, in normal operation, when you shut off the wipers they run until they get to park position. Your guys can't find their way home. Put your hand on the wiper motor while all this is going on. If it's running continuously, I'd believe a tooth may have gotten knocked off the big nylon main gear inside the wiper assembly that meshes with the motor's worm gear. After that, I wouldn't know what else to do except lift the lid on the assembly and do a visual inspection. Maybe someone else can offer more.
It's probably not the switch on the dash. I'd pull the plug on it just to make sure. If the wipers keep keep twitching it's not the switch.
Did this just start, or has it been doing this for a while? Done any creative wiring just before this started? :>)
Hope This Helps,
Bob D.- Top

Bob:
This isn't a new occurence, they haven't worked since I've owned the car (7 months). I drive the car but not in shaky weather so the wipers aren't an issue. It's only now that I'm going to have the car flight judged that I've had the need to get them to work properly. No creative wiring recently either. I think your theory of a bad tooth sounds likely. I'll pull the wire at the switch as well to see if that's the problem.- Top
