    1969 435 Auto

Does anyone have any idea how many 435 automatics were built in 1969? I know that there wer 8,161 auto's built, but not sure how many would have been 435's, I would think more like 300hp or a 390hp car, any ideas????

    Thanks

    Rich

    Rich-----

The numbers were quite small, but I don't know that anyone has an accurate record.

The total number that I read was 255 435/AT cars.

255, per 1981 letter from GM (G.M Zuccker, Asst. Mgr, Passenger car purchasing; to Tom Watson) and described in May 1982 "Vette" magazine.

I have a convertible, another guy in the next town has a coupe.

Rare enough that many people are unaware they existed. If you have one, I'm curious about power options (or lack of).

          L71 and/or L89 question

Steve is that L71 AND L89, just L71, or exactly what? Inquiring minds want to know.

            Re: L71 and/or L89 question

My impression and opinion is that 255 includes L71 and L89. The letter (I can scan and post as a .pdf, if someone will tell me how) says this:

"In response to your question, 255 1969 Corvettes were built with a 427 C.I.D./435 HP automatic transmission."

I understand that there were also some number of automatic L88's, as well as one of the ZL1's (I think the yellow Roger's one).

All of these would have used the "CY" turbo 400, apparently.

            Steve

PS: Hopefully this spring I'll know first-hand, but reportedly this is an incredible combination.

              Re: L71 and/or L89 question

It's the orange L-88 of John Maher that has an automatic transmission. Roger's yellow one is a 4 speed.

                Re: L71 and/or L89 question

I had an opportunity to take a "test" drive in an L71/M40 once. My conclusion -- the torque multiplication of an automatic transmission is exactly what the L71 or L89 needs.

                  Steve,

So far in the 1971 LS6 registry/survey, we have 14 LS6/automatics. There were 212 LS6 engines coded at Tonawanda facility. I believe the breakdown between CPW and CPX engine suffixes was about 34 to 36 for automatics.

I located a '71 War Bonnet yellow convertible LS6/automatic recently and found a new home for it just last week. They are indeed a pretty rare combination, and not often seen.

                    Re: 1969 435 Auto

Chuck and Joe thanks. I saw a real ZL-1 auto this past summer at an NCRS event and have been interested since then about how many Auto's existed. I might have an interesting story about one tomorrow. Chuck, do you have a copy of that letter that you could forward on??

                    Thanks

As far as options I think you could get everything except air. I have three of the cars all with tank stickers. Ones is plain jane go fast and one with pipes, PB, PS F40 Speed minder teletilt etc...and one in between. The rarest thing about these cars is the idle solonoid and bracker there are very few left
