They are used to keep the exhaust manifold bolts from loosening up and causing a lot of racket. Vibration does this. I dont think an air conditioner or lack thereof would make much difference nor would the displacement of the engine block.

P.S. Don't forget, I'm a C1 mouse motor man and don't know squat about big blocks, dump trucks or diesel locomotives. (steam engines yes. I used to help change their tires when I worked one summer many many moons ago)- Top

Mouse Motors
Hey Dale, I hope you did not take one of my earlier comments about mouse motors to mean CHEV mouse motors! 283's and 327's have big pistons (or at least large total displacement) compared to the current crop of oversea mouse motors.
