How did the General assemble the rear bumper "main" bracket under the tire well on solid axles? This the third time I have had to remove and reinstall this piece of steel and fun it is not... Just Curious

What year?
Dennis, There were 4 different rear bumper designs from 53 to 62. What year are you working on? What specifically are you having difficulty with? Alignment? Are your parts original, NOS, Repops? Eric #3,182- Top

Re: What year?
I'm guessing he's talking about 61-62. That's the piece that's just about imposible to get between the rear valance and the spare tire well, going either in or out. We've had many discussions over the years on how they did that--but nothing definitive.- Top

Re: What year?
Mike...
61 & 62 are the years...I have been working on these cars for years, each time I pull this bracket out, the same question comes up

Re: What year?
Mike & Dennis: You have gotten this bracket out? I was not having any luck removing it last weekend, so I checked the archives. The only thread I found indicated it was impossible without removing the rear valence. Is there some trick that would help? Thanks.- Top

Re: What year?
Rick...
If you will notice, the spare tire well sets more to the right than the left. Move the bracket towards the left, try to keep it flat to the rear valence, as you move it, you will have to bend the right side just a bit. move the bracket down towards the rear of the wheel well and with some tugging it will come out. Remember the bend, for when you install it, I use a 2X4 about 6 inches long to press the bracket into the bolt pattern.
This not easy, so stay cool and remember it will come out....
Good Luck,
