Re: firing up a fresh L72 engine

I am in the same boat this week on my L-68. Oil priming is that safest way to go. I have to run my cam in at 2000 RPM's for 30 minutes. I am putting my mark at TDC and bringing number one at the distibutor to that point plus some. I will have the timing light hooked up and ready so that as soon as it fires I will set to about 18-22 degrees. Hoping that there are no leaks.

Unless you think that the timing should be right at TDC, place the balancer notch at the CORRECT INITIAL TIMING POINT ON THE TAB - say 10 degrees, the OE spec, or whatever you think it should be, then rotate the dist. housing until the points just open. If you use an ohmmeter and rotate the housing to where the needle just jumps to the opposite end of the scale you will be within one degree of where the balancer notch is on the timing tab, which means your timing will actually be within one degree where it should be, not zero degrees TDC.

        This ain't rocket science.

Do a final initial timing check and adjustment after the cam break-in.
