    Re: 57 Wheels

    Chris -

From my 1996 notes, my late May '57 (#4275) had April-dated welded wheels, with four "nubs" for the wheel covers and no formations to retain dog-dish caps; nothing in my notes about dog-bones or single-vs.-double humps - wasn't "up" on that stuff ten years ago.

      Re: 56/57 Wheels

I have gotten a few more response and:
      riveted (July 56),riveted (nov 56), welded (jan 57), welded(mar 57), welded (may 57), welded (may 57), riveted (Jul 57)

I cannot confirm all above as original but a few seem to have good credentials.

Where do I look for a date stamp on my 57 wheels? Can I find it within taking the tires off the wheels?

No, it is on the tire side of the rim and the tire has to be removed. Normally by the valve stem but could be anywhere. Very hard to see if dirty/rusty.

The interior wheel stampings will look like this:

Here's a photo Dan Adie asked me to post for him (posts as Dan NCRS#60) of a March '56-dated wheel that's welded, dog-bones, large 5/8" valve stem hole, four wheel cover "nubs", three dog-dish cap "nubs", double humps, GM stamp on the formation between the lug holes and "Patent Pending" on another formation between lug holes.

                Re: 56/57 Wheels

Here is what I have for the dates below so far. Again I cannot be sure all are original to car build date.

John the Mar-56 wheel date would probably be an April 56 date so I put it there.

                    C1 5" wheels

I have 19 responses on 56/57 steel base 5" wheels at this time. I also put a request through the C1 registry.

I would like to extend this study from 54 MY through 62 MY base 5" wheels.

1.)Are the wheels welded or riveted?

2.)Do they have dogbones or not? Here is picture of welded with dogbones:

                    User & password is Chenige

3.) Whether the wheels have a double hump?

4.) build date of your car and whether you think they are original.

If possible I would love to have the date code that is on the rim. the tire has to be off the rim. There should be a 2 digit year (57) and a month (11).

Thanks, would love to get this data through email.
