Do any of you guys know the correct casting number for a 57 Chevy none power brake master cylinder? This car was assembled in Norwood,Ohio the first week of September of 1957. How do you read the casting date? I know this is not a Corvette but thanks anyway for your help. Keith M.

Re: 57 Chevy none power brake master cylinder
Joe,Thanks. What I have is a one inch bore with a casting number of 5454718 and on the front of the cylinder is a metal plate that is embedded in the casting with the numbers of 5454716 and below them are the numbers 320-L stamped on this plate. On the right side of the cylinder below the 1" DIA is stamped 8-D and to the right of that is somehting that looks as it was held into palce with two screws while being cast with the number 74. Thanks for your help. Keith- Top

The finished PART # for this master cylinder is supposed to be the same as the casting number. I'm sure that the embedded plate is the finished part number for the unit and it's obviously correct. However, are you sure that what looks like an "8" at the end of the casting number is not actually a "6"?In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I'm sure that the "74" is just waht you suggest----a mold or pattern number or some other manufacturing code, the meaning of which is "lost in antiquity".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
