My sidepipe covers were in pretty bad shape. There were some deep scratches, and the forward sections just behind the front wheels were sandblasted from the tire "kick-up".
I had what was left of the original adodizing stripped off, then I polished the shiny parts to a beautiful finish after removing the scratches, etc. For the dull recessed areas, I plan on painting them with Eastwood Rally Wheel Silver paint as per the (erroneous) NCRS Judging Manual after prepping the surface.
I would like to spray the entire covers with clearcoat to prevent oxidation, but am concerned about yellowing. All anodizing shops that I have contacted tell me that if I have them "bright dipped" and then re-anodized as in the original process, that all areas of the covers, including the dull sections, will take on a shiny finish. Apparently, these parts were originally produced using a complex and expensive process. Re-masking and "vapor blasting" the dull sections was mentioned, but is very expensive to re-do.
Any ideas on the clearcoat?????
Joe
