    Lake Country Regional

I just returned from Minnesota and the regional at Monticello. What a good experience! The cars were VERY high quality. Shows we're all doing something right. I would encourage all NCRS members to attend these events more often. I want to thank the North Central Chapter for all the hard work necessary to host the regional and for a GREAT selection of site. The country and climate is beautiful. It was unfortunately a long drive to the nearest Motel 6 but what the heck, you can't have everything!

Why do chapters charge a late fee? I would think that if anyone discovered that their plans had changed at the last minute to allow attendance, they should not be penalized but encouraged to come. Surely the number of box lunches or do-nuts ordered couldn't be that critical. Why not penalize late dudes by withholding some trinkets such as key chains, beer can insulators, tourist guides, bottle openers, Pro-Team advertising, coffee cups or hat pins? I'd rather loose those items than the extra $20.00 it cost to work hard and support the event after driving 2000 miles and sacrificing six days of my time. Like Vinnie P says, judging points cost about $100.00 each! Who want's to be a Master Judge? Only $10,000 per copy. Expensive black hat!

It's a darn good thing that seeing your friends and examining some great Corvettes is worth a LOT MORE than the money and time. This comaradire is where it's ALL at! What GREAT fun! I'm already looking forward to Mars, Pa. on the 8th of June. (No late fee on that one). By the way, I paid my late fee without comment and smiled with gusto! This behavior drove Dale Crosby (Judging Chairman) nuts as he and associates had prepared for a free-for-all over it. He kept on asking me, "Are you SURE you didn't give anybody a hard time over the late fee?" My gleeful payment was the only way I could get even! I drove "nice" on the way home to avoid another speeding ticket and set the Dodge cruise control on 80 except for Missouri where 85 is the custom. New diesel truck gets around 20 mpg if you keep your foot out of it. The savings on fuel alone will pay for the truck in about 35 years, which is how long I plan to keep it! (I'll be 100 years old by then if the cigars and beefeater hold out)

Now for the serious work: Plotting to capture the PCV valve!

    Late Charges and PCV Valves

    Hey Dale:

Glad you enjoyed the great time, wish I was there to louse it up for you. I think you would have heard my complaining all the way to Florida about a late charge , how many $$$ do they need from fellow members anyway, but I'm certain these high end business decisions are beyond my capacity to comprehend.

The PCV valve will be an uphill battle, we have attempted to shame Joe into the "contribution", songs have been written in your behalf, sabotage discussed , all to no avail. I think an armed intervention on your part is justifiable.

      Re: Late Charges for Meets

Late registration fees are not designed to empty the pocketbook or add to the coffers of the NCRS. They are just a reminder to get that registration in on time. The host chapter must have a ballpark figure of how many people are attending any given meet. Meeting rooms must be reserved if there are technical sessions or judging schools. The banquet caterer must be lined up months in advance with an estimated number of people, which must be finalized before the last minute. Yes, a FEW last minute additions can be accommodated, but not massive numbers.

For those of you chasing the black hat or more, one of the most important reasons to pre-register is to get one's name to the team leaders. I don't know how many times my husband, who is a former team leader, used to get complaints from someone about not being selected for his team. His stock answer was, "I didn't have your name. Did you register?" About 3/4 of the time, the answer was no. Team leaders cannot read minds and know who is coming to a regional. Nor can the meet chairman guess how many meals to reserve for the awards banquet.

Please do the host chapter a favor and pre-register for any meet. If you have never hosted a Regional, you cannot imagine the planning that goes on months in advance.

        Re: Lake Country Regional

Dave, The Beefeaters and cigars should aid the next 35 years...... however that Dodge pickup truck with a Cummins engine is unforgivable!!!! I hope you park it far from the meet.

        Keep on keeping on.

          Re: Late Charges for Meets

I agree 100% with what you say Rebba but for someone who dosen't plan to go due to prior commitments (not to mental institutions or other troublesome incarcerations), and then at the last minute a change of plans allows attendance, I think such attendance should be encouraged. In Fact, the chapter should PAY such an attendee a late rebate for dedication and enthusiasm beyond the norm! There's two sides to every situation. The chapter registrar should have the lee-way to waive late charges with justifiable explanation. We'd soon know the ones who took advantage of this policy and we could deny them waviers!

            UNFORGIVABLE

EVERYTHING GM ever did is unforgivable except the Corvette! I used to park my 1976 4x4 Country Cadillac pick-up as far away from judged events as possible, usually near the dumpster. It's a CHEVROLET and leaks a quart of oil every time I stop it. Also, it smells so bad it draws flies! They wanted $25.00 to put it in the crusher at the salvage yard! Even the rust is rusting. I haven't had floors in it for four years. The drivers window FELL OFF on the interstate!

Those of us who know the "taste of victory" by driving a Dodge Diesel as opposed to the "anguish of defeat" will agree without hesitation that the Cummins engine is the most economical AND torquey mountain flattener on the market. Also our good taste is apparent in the superior Dodge styling! NEVER AGAIN a Chevrolet truck (or Ford) for me! I'm enjoying the Heck out of this new toy!

              GMC P/U with Cummins Diesel

I recently bought a 38 GMC pickup from the original owner's son. I has never been hit or rusted and has the 1961 plates from the last time it was used, primarily as transportation, not a work vehicle

I was looking for a late model wrecked P/U to get the frame and running gear from to mount the mint sheetmetal on. For some reason, I never even thought of using anything but GM underpinnings so I had hoped to find a wrecked SS454 and even considered a wrecked C5 but then I stumbled on a Dodge narrow Dually with the Cummins. It was in the hold of an ocean-going vessel and broke loose so the sheetmetal is destroyed but everything I need is substantially intact although the frame may be tweaked and will have to be, at least, checked if not straightened. As soon as I can figure out how to deal with the pedal assemblies and mount the master cylinder, etc. to the GMC firewall, I hope to start the swap. I think I may have to build a phony tool box for the bed to house the A/C stuff, though.

Anyone ever done anything like this before? Any advice?

                Re: Late Charges for Meets

                Dale,

I fully understand, as I am in this situation right now with respect to the Bowling Green National Meet. I have some work commitments for the prior week, and will not know until literally the last minute (such as Friday July 21) whether I can make the meet. I have considered either registering and sending in my $35, which I am likely to lose, or waiting and spending $65 to OJ for a day (Monday) plus travel, etc. as I'm sure I won't get to judge by showing up at the last minute.

Either way, it will be $30-35 extra for the priviledge not being able to commit at this point.

Oh well, at least I can make Carlisle, and have sent that one in.

Re: GMC P/U with Cummins Diesel

I tried to pull off a similar stunt years ago but the shock treatments caused me to loose motivation! Why dontcha buy ole red, with 4x4, auto tranny, and bullet-proof 400 cu in engine massaged right. She needs a new body and shes a Chevrolet. I spent hours polishing a set of 350 cu in rods and then had them shot peened and heat treated. Lots of mostly 1962 Corvette parts on the mill. 397 intake, 3269S AFB carb, ultradyne cam, rhodes lifters, rams head exhaust, steel crank! She needs a face lift and new home.

                    Re: UNFORGIVABLE

Dale, A thousand pardons.... my tongue was firmly in cheek when I sent my earlier response.... except of course the part about the cigars and beefeaters..... even if they don't extend your life by 35 years, they'll certainly make it more enjoyable!

Enjoy your Corvette and your Dodge pickup truck. It's nice to see that there are still people with passion about the vehicles they drive.

If I see a Dodge pickup driver waving while I drive my 66 roadster I'll know it was you and wave back. Heck I might even light up a cigar.

                    Cheers, Mike
