    Thread Chasing in Head

Annoyed with the oil weepage past my intake manifold bolts (and having nothing better to do) I have proceeded to pull the intake to chase the threads on the bolts and the heads. How do I keep the liberated metal shavings, grime, sealant etc. from dropping into the engine? Do I need to pull the heads as well? I'm willing to take the extra time to do it right, but was wondering if there was one of those great voodoo tricks for this job. Thanks once more,

    Jeph

BIG OLE MAGNET does the job for me. Use sealant on the threads afterward.

    Varooom!

With the intake manifold off, as you apparently have it, I liberally cover the lifter valley with shop towels. The blue disposable ones work best, Also, make sure that you pack the towels up and behind the area of the cylinder head where the manifold bolts go through. Grease the tap so that it will retain as many of the chips as possible and allow the rest to fall on the towels. Make sure that the towels are placed so that the debris cannot get behind them.

Clean the threads THOROUGHLY with several applications of brake cleaner or Berryman's B-12, allowing the excess cleaner to be absorbed by the toweling. A brass brush used for cleaning the bores of guns will help clean the threads. Apply the cleaner until it runs completely clear and free from foreign matter. It is very important that the threads be VERY CLEAN if the sealer is to work properly.

Lastly, apply a sealer like Indian Head or Non-hardening Permatex to the bolts.
