    61 Dash Pad

I am installing a new Corvette America dash pad. I removed the foam from the back of the pad like the articles say. The cluster now fits snug to the dash, my problum is on the left side where the outer edge of the cluster makes contact with the dash pad, it destorts the pad. I've tried many different solutions, but to no avail. Anybody have similar experiences? Any help would be appreciated. A photo can be seen at:

    Re: 61 Dash Pad

Joe: I have a '61 and put in a new dash pad a few years ago. I took out the foam as instructed and had no problem with the cluster on the left side. My guess is that there may be a flaw in the pad itself. These things do not fit especially good and you may have to do some adjusting or filling to get a good fit without distortion. Art Bruns

Joe- Removing foam from that area will cause the pad to loose its shape as your photo indicates. You might try carefully applying heat to the area with a heat gun, and gently messaging the pad back into shape. It is important that your cluster is painted and ready to be permanently installed to insure that this remedy works. The cluster is key in holding the pad in its proper place for successful instalation. Good luck.

Didja ever see a photo of the dash pad on an "as delivered" new 1961 coming out the door at St.Louis? God-awful wrinkles in seat covers, dash pads and convertible tops were the norm! I'd say you were on the road to a "credible" original style restoration! Congratulations! (Remember, it ain't a Ferrari!)

        Varooom!
