    Muncie Howl

I just completed putting in a new clutch assembly in my 63 swc. I have a problem though. There is a howl/vibration that comes up the stick shift. It was doing the same thing prior to the new clutch assembly instillation. It isn't all the time. Usually around 50 to 60 mph. Does somebody know what this is? Thank you for your help!!!

There are several possibilities here. First off, did you replace the pilot bushing when you replaced the clutch? If it was worn before you replaced the clutch and then you replaced the clutch without replacing it, you'd end up with the same old problem.

Second, there could be some imbalance in the flywheel/pressure plate assembly. This could have existed prior to clutch replacement and, if you didn't have the assembly balanced prior to installation of the new unit, could easily continue. I've, personally, had this occur. So. I'd never install a new clutch without having the flywheel/pressure plate assembly balanced. The last new GM clutch I installed required a relatively large amount of weight to get into balance. Smooth as glass, though, after installation.

Third, there could be a deficiency in the transmission, itself. Worn bearings or a worn tailshaft extension bushing could generate this type of problem.

Lastly, keep in mind that pre-1966 Corvettes with manual transmissions had the shifter linkage bolted to the transmission, itself. This type of design makes the shifter very susceptible to transfer of noise and vibration from the driveline. So, some degree of vibration/noise can be expected in a perfectly functioning unit. In 1966, Chevrolet changed the installation of the shifter linkage from the transmission extension housing to a crossmember-mounted bracket. This was done to help reduce shifter noise and vibration. For 64-65 Corvettes, the 66-67 bracket (GM #3888263--discontinued but available in reproduction) can be installed to help eliminate vibration/noise. I'm not sure if it can be installed on a 63, but, I expect, that on 63s with Muncie transmissions it can be installed.
