Does all of the 265 engines have a date code only ending in 6 or sometimes does it end in 56? I have an original 265 block # 3720991 but it has a date code of G2756 on it. Could this be used on the 56 Corvette? Or is it passenger car only?

Re: 1956 date codes
Date codes with two digit years (56) are Tonowanda, NY castings. These were not used on Corvettes. Corvette engines of this vintage came from the Flint plant and had a single digit to indicate the year.
The front pad of your block should have a sequence number of 8 digits (I think), then T56?. The 'T' part indicates Tonowanda, NY.
Now, here is a test: What does G256 indicate? Is that July 2nd, 1956 from Tonowanda NY or July 25th, 1956 from Flint, MI? Assume that this is an intake manifold and does not have a stamp pad. There must be a way to distinguish between the two.- Top

Re: 1956 date codes
John,
The stamp pad should be in this sequence xxxxxYY F56XX The first five numbers should align straight because they were held in a gang and struck one time, the YY numbers should be somewhat misaligned because they were each struck individualy, the F56XX should be aligned straight because they were struck in a gang at one time. If your pad ends in F56X and no second digit, I believe that it is a passenger car block. If I am wrong I am sure that someone will correct me on this.

Re: 1956 date codes
The stamp pad will probably have the sequence number followed by T56xx, where T indicates Tonowanda plant (because of the two digit year in the casting date). The suffix code (the xx part) could be one or two characters. For example, a suffix of G would indicate a two bbl carb, manual trans, in a passenger car; a suffix of FB would indicate a four bbl carb, automatic transmission, installed in a passenger car.
Aren't "numbers matching" fun?- Top
