I bought a 1961 Corvette several years ago. Car is not stock. I wanted to find a air cleaner that would fit the Holley carb. However, hood clearance is a big problem. Also the coil is very close to the carb. The drop down base plate aftermarket cleaners hit it. Then when I move the coil, the car ran poorly (like vapor lock). The repo assemblies are not for holley and they are expensive. Any suggestions.

Re: Air Cleaner for 1961 Vette
I have a high rise Chevy aluminum intake manifold, Holley carb, and a "drop down" air cleaner base on my '62. The hood and the coil fit just fine. My Holley is not notched for the air cleaner base, so the air cleaner does not fit perfectly on the carb. The intake manifold and air cleaner are from an LT-1. They were about the tallest Chevy ever made for passenger car use on the street. Are you using an adapter to get the Holley to fit your intake manifold? How thick is that adapter?
You should be able to relocate the coil without any change in the engine operating condition. The coil doesn't care where it sits. Check the wiring and the conections. If you mounted the coil on the car (firewall, etc.), the coil wire would be subject to vibration while the engine moved and the coil did not.- Top
