Hello everyone, I have 2 1967 seats that I think are in excellent condition with the exception of the teal seat covers which have stained. Knoch is going to put on new covers at bloomington. Question is: is it prudent to put new seat foams in now because of the shear age of the foam? what are most of you doing? this car was a one owner 50k mile car that had not been abused. Doing a body off resto and going for all the judging marbles, what do you think? Thanks in advance..... Tony D

Re: Seat resto whats the norm?
Hi Tony, I went ahead and popped for the seat foam along with the new covers. After 100,000 miles, my seats were a little flat in some areas, so I did it for cosmetic purposes primarily. I have heard several local members with low mileage cars comment that their seat foam was degrading even thought their seat covers were in good condition. If it were me, I'd get the foam while they're in there and you don't have to worry about it a year or two down the road. Jeff http://thegunns.home.texas.net- Top

Re: Seat resto whats the norm?
Tony,
If Al Knoch and Co are really going to do the work, then get the foam. The foam breaks down over time, and it isn't worth the little bit of money saved not to replace.
My suggestion would be to remove the covers and foam yourself, then bring your freshly blasted and repainted frames along to Bloomington. This will save space as well, not having to drag the foam, etc. along.

Re: Seat resto whats the norm?
Hi Tony:
67 seats ? Does this mean you are no longer interested in my 69
From my experience if you don't replace the foam, (especially true of leather ) , they will not look tight and will quickly look even worse, best to replace.

Re: Seat resto whats the norm?
This is an interesting question, especially for leather seats. I have always been reluctant to change the foam unless it was just too far gone. I think that usually the seats done with new foam look too blown up. The 67 seat especially is supposed to be flat accross the bottom. Also the reproduction seatcovers are not constructed like the originals. The foam had an extra bolster pad glued to the foam and the seatcover had no padding in the wing area. All new repros. have the padding sewn into the covers themselves which causes some wrinkle problems in my oppinion. Many times I have had comments on my seats like," How did you get them to look like that? Thats the way their supposed to be." I just installed the new covers on the old foam and left the glued on bolster pads there. The extra padding in the new covers makes up for the old foam. A little cotton stuffing here and there and they are nice. The decision is yours.- Top
