    C2 Body Number

Cleaning up my engine compartment, I found the body number on the passenger footwell. I was planning on re-spraying the area with semi-gloss and re-creating the body number on top of that. Would this be correct or was the number covered up during the engine compartment blackout process? Thanks in advance.

      Re: C2 Body Number

      Hi Rick:

I've always been a little confused about the number that appears in this particular location. When I cleaned off the same area on my March 67 AO Smith body, I found what appeared to be a 4-digit number, but it was hard to read. Since all St. Louis job numbers were 1 to 500, this mystified me.

Later I think I read on this board that the number in that location was the body job number from the AO Smith plant, so I took that to be the explanation for the apparent 4-digit number.

Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Job numbers existed on 63 cars, ie StLouis build. See Noland Adams pg 20 &21. Note the number was on body before black out process. My Mar64 StLouis is job number 370 and is still visible in both locations. If AO Smith used 4 digits - do not know,

however I would think that the number was assigned on assembly line so correct body style would end up with correct options such as motor which also had job # on back of head. But not sure of this!

I found the production run numbers in three locations on my 63: the engine bay fire wall right side, the rear bulk head right side and on the right engine head.

                  Joe,

I have collected data on AOS job numbers. AOS used a 3 digit number running from 1-500 for their job numbers just as STL. The difference is that AOS also used a letter designation which preceded the job number. The letter designation was sequential by group of 500. For examplet (A1-500, B1-500, C1-500, etc.) There is more info in the archives. Hope that helps.

My June, '67 A. O. Smith body had the number 383 written (in yellow grease pencil) on the pass firewall and the rear area bulkhead in front of the gas tank. 383 is also written on the top of the birdcage that supports the driver's side dash (red grease pencil).

Thanks Don. That helps to explain why the number on my passenger footwell looked like it was 4 digits. It was in yellow, and looked like it said 1473 or something like that. The lettering was sloppy and hard to read, but it certainly looked like four characters instead of three.

                          More body number stuff:
On my orig. 66 with 41 K miles owned for 38 years, build date 22 June 66 - the 3 digit build code is on the back bulk head as seen from under the car. Used a couple of mirrors to read it. I had to replace the vinal head liner on the hard top and the same 3 digit numbers appear in the center, rotated 45 deg with respect to front of car. Under the dash on cross bar there is a 4 digit code, white lop sided characters - this happens to be my ignition and door lock key code.
My 65 build date 8 Jan 65 has the same 4 digit key code number on the cross bar and it matches the key numbers.
Anyone else see this number and has had the oportunity to compare it with his ignition tubler number?

My 66 block had a scrawled check mark in yellow crayon on each side, It had some ones initials with the check mark also in yellow crayon. There were 3 numbers? They were all upside down. Meaning that they were put on when the engine was seting on its top. Having seen the early assembly operation at Flint Michigan 35 years ago. They were put on when the pistons / rod assemblies were installed. There were number because in 72 I repainted it never realizing what they might mean - Before NCRS.

                              Mark -

Yup, the cowl & dash subassembly was also marked, as shown in your photo, as that assembly had MANY different option condition details specific to that particular car, not the least of which was A/C; the number was covered up when the front clip was bonded on.
