    1972 Jack Stand Support Points

Which are the best chassis suspension points to support the car on jackstands so that with all tires off the ground, the car sits as if it were on the ground?
    Thanks in advance!

    Larry------

The best jack stand mount points are the ones that GM says are the ones to use. These are found in the Chevrolet Service Manual applicable to your model year. An excerpt is found attached. The points that I recommend using are the ones that are approved by Chevrolet and which I've circled in red. These will provide for the greatest stability.

      Joe,

Thanks very much for your reply. The suspension will droop when those support points are used. I'm interested in support points that will have the tires raised off the ground, but allow the suspension geometry and wheel/tire relationship to be as with the car on the ground. Are there good placement points for jackstands to accomplish that?

        Larry------

What you desire and the use of jackstands are "mutually exclusive". In other words, if you use jackstands anywhere on the frame, the suspension is going to "droop".

Theoretically, to achieve what you want you could install the jackstands under the front lower a-frames in the area of the lower ball joint and under the shock mounts at the rear of the car. You're still not going to get a true rear suspension configuration , though, since there will be no way to normalize the suspension once the jack stands are under the mounts.

In addition, the locations which I described are not Chevrolet-approved mounting points. It's very possible that using them could cause damage to suspension components.

          Joe,

Thanks as always for your help. Sounds as if I need a drive-on lift to do what I want.

Well, you can always support the car by using ramps at all 4 wheel positions. The problem is that you pretty much need to install the rear ramps by jacking the car at the frame and, then, putting the ramps under the wheels. Unfortunately, by doing this you lose the normalization of the rear suspension.

Hi Larry what are you trying to do?

1- Do you want to raise the car enough to take the compression off the springs?
If so, refering to Joe's diagram, you can put jack stands on the four points of the frame which are the exact shown in the jacking instructions, and raise the vehicle up enough so the tires are just barely touching the ground. The car is stable and safe.

2- Our is there another reason?

              Ken.
