    '68 Keys

    OK, the JG says that in 1968, the hex head "C" Key was for the ignition & doors & that the oval head "D" key was for the glove box & spare tire lock.

    Were the glove box & spare tire lock (D-key) coded differently than the doors & ignition (C-key)?

    I currently don't have a spare tire lock, & rear compartment has locks on the jack & center compartments that are keyed to the ignition.

    Yes, the two keys were different. My original 68 only has a lock on the center compartment and it is keyed to match the spare tire carrier.

      Anthony - Originally, 68s came with two different keyway keys, the "C" keyway key and the "D" keyway key.

      As Jim pointed out, the oval (GM calls it a round head key) head key should operate the compartment and spare tire locks. These should both use the round head key with the "D" keyway.

      The hex (it's really an octagon head key) head key should operate the ignition and door locks. These should both use the octagon head key with the "C" keyway.

      The "C" key should not go into the "D" keyway locks so it sounds like someone wanted to minimize the number of keys and has modified the compartment locks to accept the "C" key and also changed the tumblers to match the "C" key KEY CODE.
