Don't grind off the chrome plate

Be careful not to polish off the chrome plating on the window stainless. Use a non-abrasive cleaning compound or jeweler's rouge. All Corvette stainless was "smack" chrome plated as a labor saving technique. Lot thinner coat than "flash" chrome. After all the plating is gone the stainless turns "yellowish".

    Varooom!

Re: what to pay for buffing windshield stainless

        Tony,

This isn't answering your question, but you might consider buffing it yourself.

I started out thinking I would pay someone to do it, but then I saw an article on buffing stainless and decided to give it a try. If you have a bench grinder, it will do the job. Ideally, they like to sell you a higher speed (3600 rpm) buffing machine on a pedestal (about $500 and up). You can get everthing you need (buffing wheels, white rouge, etc.) from Eastwood (www.eastwoodcompany.com).

Be patient, go slow, and feed the work with the least amount of pressure to get the results you want. CAUTION: If you use too much pressure, and the work gets on the wrong side of the wheel, you will anger the buffing wheel demon . It will ****** that priceless piece of trim from your hands and fling it across the room with such violence and velocity that your outstreached hands will be momentarily frozen as your bewildered mind trys to comprehend what just happened. Then, you find that 1/2" wide X 4' long windshield molding in a twisted, ruined heap in the corner. Didn't happen to me, but close.
