    Hi Collin.

I have several pix of various "iterations" of what I believe to be correct 63 dipsticks. Problem is I have to upload them somewhere and link to here.

Wish (hint) this DB would upgrade and allow direct uploading of pictures. Chuck

AND...is it an M or a W? Some look like M...while others look like W.

              Chuck,
I have one in my 61 the has ADD and FULL but no ENGINE OIL. Could that be pre- 63.???? It has a very small E stamped on it just above the metal stop cup.

Many thanks...the photo that shows the top, that is for a 300 horse car correct, the L76 was flat with chrome correct...

                    Re: C2 Calling Chuck Gongloff

The 250 and 300 HP had painted handles. The 340 and 360's were chrome...handle and washer. Other than that fact, they were identical, I THINK. I do know that there is no difference between the sticks used in 5 qt. vs. 6 qt. pans.

I've seen some that have the info stamped, and I've seen some that have the info embossed. I've seen some that definitely have an M, and I've seen some that look like a W, as the legs of the letter are more flared. W and M? Could be either, reading upside down.

2 suppliers? The M company and the W company? Dunno. Maybe one company with different style stamps? One friend suggested that maybe the painted ones had one stamp and the chrome had another. Dunno that one either.

I do believe that original handles, at the end of finger "curl" area, had the metal come to a point, NOT flat like the repros.

I have several handles at the chrome plater now. Should be getting them back soon.

I'd like to see some others chime in. Chuck

Thanks Chuck, as I go along with this it only gets more confusing. Great examples and I do appreciate taking the time to answer my posts. At this point I guess I will have to work with what I got.....until I can find the new Holy Grail of the 63....Thanks Collin

As Noland Adams point out on pg. 132, early 63 L76 up to about #4,000, dipsticks had painted handles. Just my 2 cents.

HI Dr. Chuck, I remember Micheal Hanson posted a lot of picks on the DB a year or so ago. So Collins check out the archives. He and Joe Lucia put up a lot of info on lengths and part numbers of the various mid year dipsticks. In looking at the old parts books they listed this info also. Jorjorian submitted a lot of info also.
I liked what you said about the original dipsticks having a point at the end of the curl instead of the typical repro and Chevy SR's that are cut off flat. My 63 FI car has an original dipstick that was really tough and expensive to find. In the old days when repros were first available I am guessing that they were in fact not a repro at all but one that was readily available from Chevrolet. No embossing, cut off flat at the curl, had a B on the handle which most of the originals do not, and they lacked the proper nomenclature on the bottom of the stick. Dipsticks are a science in themselves for sure.
Sure would be nice to have someone out there would write some articles on those things. Recently one sold on ebay for a midyear big block for over 500 bucks. John D.
