    C1 Paint Stripping

I have a 57 C1 that had most of the paint stripped from it when I got it. There are still some areas that have paint though, and I was curious if anyone knew what type of stripper might have been used? Would this be a good approach to get the last of the paint off, or is there another method I should try?

    Thanks,

    Ashley

    Ashley,

The main thing is to keep chemicals off of your fiberglass as much as you can so as to not soften it and to not let chemicals wick down into the fiberglass strands. There is Kleen-Strip Fiberglass Paint Remover that is less agressive that can be used on lacquer. But if you have enamel or base-coat clear-coat on it, it won't be strong enough, and you'll have to use Aircraft Stripper, which I did. Just be sure and wipe down the surface REAL good with lacquer thinner right after stripping and give it plenty of time to completely dry (especially from whatever wicked down into the fibers) before priming.

If I had it to do over again, I'd do soda blasting. If you fiberglass is good, you should have no problems. I stripped all my small panels in my sandblasting cabinet and it did nothing to the surfaces.

    Good luck!

    Bob

      Ashley,
Here is a link to a article that liks to use media blasting. I just heard from a painter that this is a great process that assures that there will be no gremlins to come back to haunt you later.

          Ashley,

As others have mentioned, media blasting can be a good way to strip paint. However, as with many things you must be careful. Make sure the blaster has experience with fiberglass, maybe even show you examples of their work. This extends to the specific worker doing the blasting. A friend took the doors and deck lid from his 57 to a company that had lots of experience and had done Corvettes before. The worker ruined the parts, in placing blasting holes through the part. It took some legal work to get the company to replace the parts.

I am not saying don't soda/media blast, just make sure the people doing it know what they are doing.

            Verle,
I've been checking into the media blasting option this morning. One reason it might be good for me is that the areas needing stripping are primarily door jambs, dash, trunk and soft top bays. The outside and bottom of the car has already been done.
Like you said though, I'm worried about damage. I don't know how to get completely comfortable other than just talking to him. What type of media is the best for this? I've seen people mention walnut hulls, plastic beads, and soda.

If you state where you are located maybe some one can direct you to a good source for media blasting if that is the route you choose. If there isn't too many layers of paint, sanding doesn't take that long.

I'm in Dothan, AL. The company that I've been talking to is Circle D Industries. I doubt there are too many places around here though, but if anyone knows of any, please let me know.

                Thanks,

                  Ashley,

Maybe an internet search would work to locate a soda blast place. I used glass beads (which have the potential for the most damage) on my kick panels and other small items and had no damage at all, but I can see how someone could make a hole all the way through though.

For the car, if you blast, soda is the only way to go because the whole car can be washed down and the soda is gone because it is water soluble. With anything else, it almost never can be gotten out completely. The last thing you want is to begin painting your car, hit a nook or cranny somewhere filled with sand, and have a sandstorm cover the wet surface of your car!

                    Ashley,

Do they have experience with fiberglass, Corvettes or boats?
I agree with soda as a good choice but even then make sure they know what they are doing.

You could always tell them you will come visiting with a shotgun if they ruin the car.

                      Thanks Verne,

I'll check with them and see how much fiberglass work they've done. I really wish I had the means to do this myself. I'd feel a lot better about my chances to not ruin anything.
