C1 Ign. Switch - Keeping Key In

    Hi all,

I would like to PV my car, but my ignition switch is such that the key can be removed in any position. I talked with one repairer who may be too busy to get to it in time. Is this something that can be done in my garage? How should I proceed?

    Thanks,

    Bob

I would have a new key cut 1st. Sometime that will do the trick. Otherwise you will need a lock smith to change the tumblers inside.

So what's the problem, 53-62 ignition keys can be removed from the lock cylinder in any position.

        Bob,

Both the 58-60 Judging Guide and the 53-62 PV manual state that the key cannot be reomved, with normal effort, in the off position. If these guidelines have changed, please let me know, as that will save me the trouble of fixing it.

        Thanks,

        Bob

          Bob,
I don't believe that requirement has changed. Its one of the things I had to address in preparing my 61 for PV this year. Do you have an original Delco switch and cylinder.???

            Dave,

Yes, both switch and cylinder are original.

            Thanks,

            Bob

Re: C1 Ign. Switch - Keeping Key In

Bob, I had my switch repaired at a local lock smith for $5.00 and he recovered the key number for me from the inside. I did it for the same reason, the PV. Good luck, Jimmy

                Bob,
If both are originals then Paul's comment above is in order. Something is worn and its most likely the cylinder and/or the key. Does your chrome bezel on the cylinder have just 1 small hole.??? I know for 61 the originals had 1 hole. Not sure about 58-60.

                  Dave,

It has one hole and this is correct for 58-60. Looks like its time to work!

                  Thanks,

                  Bob

                    Well, '55 #518

has the original lock cylinder, and a set of NOS GM keys which were professionally die-cut, not ground, to the original lock numbers, and the key is a nice snug fit in the lock. The key can be removed in any position, and I can tell you that this has been the case at least since 1964, when I first was old enough to notice such things.
