    C-4 Key Question

On the knock out of the C-4 keys are a number, a letter, the small hole then two numbers. Can any one tell me the significance of the sequence, and how to decipher the code?

    Thanks

    Re: C-4 Key Question

    John-----

The 4 character sequence that you describe is the key code. With this code, a GM dealer and many locksmiths can cut a new key without having the old key to use as a "cutting guide". These are good numbers to keep in your wallet in case you lose your keys.

Caution: what's NOT in the key code is the VATS key number. If your car has VATS (identified by the small "oval" "pellet" affixed to the key), then you must also know the key code to have a key duplicated. This code appears nowhere on the key. Sometimes, you will find it on original literature supplied with the car. Otherwise, it can be determined by any GM dealer with a VATS "interrogator" unit which can "read" your existing key. It's a good idea to determine what your key code is AHEAD OF TIME and record it in a safe place. If you're on a trip and lose your keys, it can be a NIGHTMARE to be without your key code AND your VATS key number.

      Thanks Joe!

Is it possible to determine the key code if you have the key? I know the VATS code from the ohms resistance.

      Thanks again, John

        Re: C-4 Key Question

        John,

If you bring your key to a locksmith, he/she can read the key cuts and then use a code book or computer program to determine the code number from the key cuts. Unless you have a code book to convert cuts to code number, there is no way to do this yourself.
