Emissions Changes between US and New England

    Hi everyone,

I am interested in buying a 1998-1999 C-5 vette and am wondering what changes I need to make if I buy a car out of my region the Northeast, from another area, such as the south or midwest. I know that a dealer cannot in these areas sell me a car with under 7,500 miles without NE emissions being placed on it before I buy it. I am wondering if anyone knows what it takes to make the car NE emissions approved. Please let me know if you have any insight.

    Thank you,

Re: Emissions Changes between US and New England

Kevin, not exactly sure about the out of area issues, but I'm know that for the 99 model year (I ordered one and sold it in April) the emmisions hardware is identical for all 50 states even though on the window sticker/ordering form Chevy differentiates for NY/NE and California. Not sure about the 98 model year. Hope this was helpful.

      Don't worry about it...

I don't know what State you are in but they probably don't even check yet to see that you have NE emissions. Which emissions package a vehicle is equipped with is clearly stamped on the MSO and when I handed in the MSO for my 99 Hardtop to the MA RMV, even though it said, "This vehicle has Federal Emissions", they didn't even flinch. I thought maybe the State RMV Office might catch it and not issue me a title but a few weeks later it arrived in the mail.

The title you'll get with the purchase of a used vehicle will not identify the emissions package so they won't be able to tell even if they wanted to check but if you are really concerned, just put the mileage down as more than 7500. That way you can take the insurance discount for under 5000 per year and use up the difference without incurring a surcharge. They may even charge you a few dollars less sales tax for the 'extra' miles.

Here's what the bozos in CA did

Several years ago California passed a law requiring a one-time $300 fee for registering non-CA emission certified cars in CA. So if you moved from out of state with two cars you got socked six hundred bucks!

Well, all that's changed. I don't know the specifics, but I think someone took the state to federal court on a class action suit and the court decided that the fee was illegal and CA lost an appeal, so now CA has to refund tens of thousands of people for the fleecing they got. They ought to pay 'em interest and cover it by docking the pay of the idiotic legislators and bureaucrats who dreamed up this asinine scheme.

I think all 2000 and up C5s are NLEV (national low emission vehicles) compliant and meet the most stringent requirements for all states including CA and the NE.

This belies the laid back California attitude we have come to expect from you Duke, don't beat around the bush anymore, just say what's on your mind.
