C1 Corvette wheel covers

I have a 1954 Corvette, Pennant Blue (VIN E54S003234) that has the wheel covers with the flippers turned 90 degrees to the center emblem. I have had the car about 3 years and do not have a lot of history on the car other than it had a frame on restoration about 7 years ago.

Could someone tell me the story on these wheel covers? They are in excellent condition. I do not know of any repo's of these wheel covers. Every article I have read only mentions these covers on very early 53's.

when Chevy re-issued the 53 thru 55 hubcaps in the mid to late 70's, they were not stamped and drilled for the flippers. one had to send the re-issue hubcaps out for the stamping. during the stamping process, one could have stamped the flipper depressions anywhere on the hubcap . mike

Jerry, Mike is correct in what he posted, however if someone intentionally located the flippers 90 degrees from the emblems, they probably did it for a very early '53. Later '53s through '55 had the flippers in-line with the center emblems. Of course, maybe they didn't know what was correct for your '54 and simply indented and punched the wheelcovers one way or the other and, without instructions, prepared then as they are. The only person I know (Ron Jones) who was doing this would NOT have made such a mistake but there may have been others offering this service. Kent #6201
