C1 Leak Between Trans & Bellhousing

    Hi all,

My transmission is a newly rebuilt unit by Darrell's 4-speeds and has maybe 100 miles on it. It is leaking fluid but I can't really tell from where. It is coming out right at the bottom right where the trnasmission and bellhousing connect. I took off the inspection cover and all is dry in there on both clutch and transmission sides.

So, any ideas as to where the fluid might be coming from?

    Thanks,

    Bob

gear oil almost certainly coming from cluster gear shaft due to excess clearance between the (i assume) aluminum t-10 case and the shaft itself. i've had intermittant success by removing the 4 tranny case to bellhousing Bolts, inserting four 3" to 6" long pieces of all thread thru the t-10's four ears and into the bellhousing threads(which allows you to slide the tranny back). once back drain tranny fluid and thoroughtly clean with ether the case/shaft interface. use compressed air to blow all the grease back into the case. repeat the ether/compressed air a half doz times. then apply some RTV onto the case/shaft interface and bolt her back together. fill the tranny the next AM after RTV sets up. then pray to the Borg Warner God that its leak-free. if not, a replacement case may be in order if the shaft is perfect(and it ususally is). if you have a muncie(not used in C-1's) get back with me with year of muncie for further instructions. goo0d luck, mike

      Bob-----

First, you need to be sure where it's coming from-----the engine or the transmission. Transmission oil has a much higher viscosity than engine oil (except, maybe one of the engines in those old tractors I hear Mike has around his place). So, try this: take a lit bit of the "dripping" and place it between the thumb and forefinger of one hand. Then, remove the engine oil dipstick and place some of the engine oil from it between the thumb and forefinger of your other hand. You should be able to easily discern the difference. Report back what you find.

Or...Once you have it rubbed between your thumb and fore finger, take of a whiff of your finger. If your finger smells like a dinosaur outhouse that's been rotting in the equatorial sun for millions of years, then it's gear oil. If you're still not sure what that would smell like, then get a little finger rub off your dipstick...it'll smell like highly refined dinosaur perfume by comparison.

Since it is newly rebuilt, I would hope that it is not leaking from the front bearing retainer. Unless I'm confused, the bolt holes penetrate through the gear case and are subject to the "wet" environment. The thread sealant could be leaking. Bolts could be loose causing leak through bolt hole or gasket. Or the worse case which I had on a Muncie tranny was the aluminum threads in the case were worn and stripped and the bearing retainer became loose and wore it from the inside out. Followed by a large amount of oil and I think some bolts ended up in the pressure plate.
