    C-2 Carb

Hi Folks! I've got a '67 small block w/ 4 barrel Holly (I think its a 4160?). It was rebuilt 2 years ago, and when the carb is working properly I drive the car on Sat and Sun, and occaisionally 1-2 days during the week. But after it sits for 3-4 weeks (ie. winter or bad weather), it starts and most of the time will idle high (warm-up idle), and then I kick it down to a normal idle and it stalls out. when I re-start it, which it does with no problem, it idles roughly and stalls within 15-20 seconds. If I keep reving the motor while I slow down to stop at a stop light, I can keep it running, but even when I accelerate, it's not smooth at all. Obviously it stays in the garage when acting up. Someone told me the choke is sticking, and to give it a sharp whack with the handle of a screw driver. I'm sure there is a better way.

The better way is to LOOK at it when it is doing it and see what is going on. Chokes do stick. Holleys also tend to leak. I was wondering if there is junk in the bowl that when it sits, the fuel leaks off and you have junk blocking the jets, but that wouldn't account for high idle.

Go out, start the car cold with the air cleaner off, and observe the choke as the car warms up. You could have a choke that isn't set right and comes off too soon or too late. The manual kick down to unset the choke is taking it off before it is ready and thus the bad idle (coold, needs choke, yu kicked it off).

Or you may need to spray the choke and linkage with some carb cleaner.

      Keith,

When it is cold enough that this will happen remove the air cleaner and push the pedal to set the choke/fast idle. The choke butterfly should close all the way. Now start it up which from what you've explained isn't a problem and watch that the choke pull off opens the the butterfly some. If that's not happening then the choke pull off is bad. If it does open some leave it at fast idle for a minute or so and by hand work the throttle to make it come off fast idle. The butterfly should open some taking the fast idle cam with it but not come completely open until engine warms up. If the butterfly is not opening you are running to rich and if it opens all the way at the first kick down then it is too lean. The spring coil (in choke stove) pulls the butterfly open as the engine warms up. This may need to be replaced or you may have a linkage issue that may be as simple as cleaning with carb cleaner so that everything works as designed.
