    Radio Repair U79

Searched the archives without success. Need a dependable repair shop for a 1969 U79 radio.

Try Elmer at 636-926-2267. He did the radio in my 67 and did a SUPER job. He charged $200 and I had it back in about a week. I got the name from another NCRS member off this site. Elmer's located in Missouri. Great guy.

When you finally choose a shop...

remember to send them the ENTIRE radio! Some forget the radio consists of two discrete assy's (the main chassis in your center console + cable connected to it, the stereo adaptor which is mounted to the WS frame behind the RH dash pad). They need both items to make the radio fully functional on the bench...

Can you easily get to the stereo adapter? Are there any tricks you have learned in taking these two out?

The stereo adaptor is a LOT easier to R&R than the main radio chassis! To get to the adaptor, you simply drop the passenger side lower dash panel look up into the RH corner of the dash.

Getting the main radio chassis out is more tricky because you have to R&R the instrument center cluster and there you REALLY want to read the step-by-step instructions in your copy of the Chassis Service Manual because if you don't do the job correctly, you'll probably wind up cracking the center cluster bezel at its designed-in weak points (intended to let go in the stress of a frontal crash)....
