OK the whole story.When your car is going to judging! I hate the word rust/New name "showing it age".And you want to clean the underside of the frame.How hard can I scrub with a 3M pad or just Simple Green and water and rag "DO NOT PAINT"The frame has "age marks" and I would like them off/But need the go ahead.Any thing I should look for? No touch areas and does it need to be crazy clean?

I had my answer 2 times but hit delete.I dont need any bad luck.But the big show is at Bloomington Gold.The car is Original unrestored.Sorry for the vage answer.So what do you do to an untouched car?This will also be its first big test for the car and me.Lyle thanks for any help on this.- Top

Simple green and water with a brush and some use diesel truck drain oil to make a rusty surface look better. Do not paint anything. BG just gives each area a quick look and if it looks untoched you get the award. Judging may only take a few minutes on some cars.

If you're going for Gold and/or Benchmark, or there's any chance you want to try for a Bowtie or other NCRS award in the future, then less is better.
As you note in my picture below in your previous thread, rust won't kill you. In every case you are better off NOT touching than touching. Use nylon or brass brushes, no scotch-brite. You only want to remove dirt and grease, not scuff the surface. Diluted Simple Green or Dawn dishwashing liquid in warm water both work well to clean. I've then used Pre-Lube 6 on rusty areas as a preservative, and I've also heard of the CRC products being used.

Denny, I think you might have misinterpreted Lyle's diesel oil comment; I believe he was serious in his response...I never known him to answer a question with sarcasim. His intent is add a little moisture back onto the dry surface, even if it makes the surface a little oily
Even so, I would still prefer the Pre-Lube 6 that Patrick suggested on rusty surfaces.- Top

My personal favorite is the CRC product Patrick linked to, but I also prefer to use it without the aerosol. Sadly the smallest size the non-aerosol product comes in is 5 gallons. The aerosol dispenser will not allow sufficient control of the application. You want it on the originally painted metal parts of the frame and suspension, NOT on the bare fiberglass or on parts of the chassis which were originally bare metal (such as the differential, drive, and half shafts). The other problem is that once you start applying it to part of the chassis there is no stopping. The edge will look like do do if you leave part of the chassis untreated. The CRC product will turn ferrous corrosion a dark color (it is NOT a conversion product, however) and blend it into the remaining (there is some remaining, right?) frame finish.
Regardless which product you chose the car will need several months to "flash off." You do not want a wet, oily appearing undercarraige. The judges will not like that -- it will cause them to think you have something to hide.
I can not adequately describe to you what a messy, and unpleasant job this is, but the results can be worth the effort. It worked for me.Terry- Top

Denny I think you have misread Lyle's intentions. I think he is serious, and his methods have worked for him, so don't knock success. I believe of the three products mentioned here the diesel oil will take the longest to flash off, so on that basis it would not be my first choice, but it is the least expensive and is available in the limited quantities for the task at hand. My guess is that whatever coating you choose, if any, a gallon should be more than sufficient -- again assuming a non-aerosol product.Terry- Top

I've done it by applying the Pre-Lube to a rag or brush, and then applying. Right now certain parts of my 72 are a "test bed" for it, to see how long it appears in an "improved" state. I'll check it out again when I get the car out of storage. I've thought about trying parts with the CRC product as well, but have yet to buy some. If I do, I suspect I'll try the aerosol can but NOT spray it drectly on the car.
I would guess that Denny thinks we are giving out very poor advice based on his posts here and off-line e-mail. Apparently I was somehow of the understanding that I had a clue as to caring for an unrestored car. Perhaps not, by his standards. If true, then apparently Lyle has even less of a clue.

The CRC site notes that the CRC-350 is supposed to "stay" wet, so I suppose if Denny needs a "quicker dry" in order to be ready in June, he may need to think about a different product.
I've thought about WD-40, but that's really too thin. He may be able to experiment with other products. According to the CRC web site, their 3-36 is thinner as is the SP-300. They might be able to provide the right "look" while aging in time for judging.
