    Starter shims on a 69

    I need help in adjusting the starter on a 69 427/390 with shims. I don't know were to look for this info.Or if anyone could help me. Is there some tool?

    You will have to take the dust shield off if car has M40, if manual transmission forget it -- no access. Paper clip between the peak of a gear tooth and the root between two gear teeth. remove the solenoid to get the starter gear to engage the flywheel full time.
    Alternately -- stuff a bunch of shims, 2 or 3, in there and see if it sounds OK. If good remove one shim at a time until it sounds bad, then add one back. Doing it by ear works for any transmission, and requires minimal work.
