Re: 71' stingray Conv.
I haven't done it on a '71 but I have on a '68. It was very tight.
If the bolt comes out and isn't rusted solid, you can remove the bolt fromt he outside only. But odds are, your captured nut inside has rusted solid and probably will spin. Try soaking with PB Blaster first for a few days and see if you can get the bolt to turn and come out. If not, you have to rip the cage off and get a wrench on the nut.
You probably need to be 21 and very limber but if like me you aren't, either find someone who is or get a friend to work on the outside because once you get into a spot where you can reach the captured nut, you don't want to be getting in and out.
I believe I had to remove the spring to get enough access. You need to prop up the decklid so it won't come down and use some large pry bars to get the spring off. I think there is a real tool for it, but I used a screwdriver to hook it and a crowbar to apply enough leverage to get it off and back on.
Naturally, it comes off easier than going back on.- Top
