Guys what do you do when you bolt up your front bumpers and your not happy with the fit, and even when you loosen things up to adjust and you cant get them perfect, i know the AIM says within a 1/4 inch of horizontal body line but i dont like the uneven look from the front view, did the factory ever use shims on the front center bumper supports that bolt to the frame . thanks fellas

The plant used locating fixtures that hung down from the front of the hood opening to position the bumpers, and tightened them with the fixtures in place; if they didn't look right, they "reefed" on them until they did.- Top

Re: C2 front bumper fit
Jim,
When I purchased my '65 I received four brand new (GM) bumpers still in boxes. I subsequently bought new bumper braces (lower ones that bolt to the cross-member and uppers that bolt to the end of the frame rails). Despite all of this being new, I couldn't get a decent fit on one of the front bumpers; in fact, I couldn't even get the lower inside bracket of it to fit inside the channel on the lower brace. Solution? I took it to a bumper shop, and they used their factory spec sheets and bending equipment to "adjust" the bumper mounting channel to its proper orientation (they didn't even charge me!!!). Result was an easy bolt-up.
This would be analagous to John's explanation of how the factory "adjusted" the bumper fit.
