Here is the answer!!!
Dave
It just came to my attention that the last four digits of the VIN # starting in 1956..was written on a label applied to the hardtop.
The hardtops were made not including the frames ( the frames were made by a separate Co. ) by Sterling Plastics and they applied a Sterling Plastics company label on the underside of the hardtop. The St.Louis factory wrote the last 4 digits of the cars VIN# on this label and also wrote the interior color on the fiberglass prior to the installation of the headliner.
I don't know how many years this was done...but now that the information is out..people restoring their hardtops can look to see if it is original to the car.
Of course this is of great interest to me..because..one day I will remove the headliner in the hard top of my Nassau/Daytona/Sebring car. This car as you know was one of the early factory race cars with a 37 1/2 gallon center fill tank and cut out back window. When the car was retired and sold for use on the street, a standard tank was installed and the center fill hole in the deck lid filled in and hard top either replaced or back window replaced.
I hope this information is valuable to people in the future...and I thank Geroge the hardtop man for revealing it to me. Thought you all might want to know!
Below is a never before published picture of my car at Sebring 50 years ago this weekend....P9
