    Ebay 67 427 /435 motor

This motor is to early for my February 1, 1967 engine assembly date from the protect-o-plate I have from the original owner, so I am not bidding on this. Just want some education from you, the experts. My car needs a 427/390 "IL" suffix. With a strike in October 1966, it is a bit confusing to me when blocks were cast and when they hit the engine assembly line. It appears (according to this ad) the engine blocks were cast approximately 28 WORKDAYS prior to assembly. OR... did the strike effect engine assembly timelines at all. Hmmmm, my calculations are I need to find a 427 cast around December 21, 1966 for my February 1, 1967 engine assembly date??? I am using the calenders out of the NCRS Birthday book. What are your thoughts, please? Below is the link. I am not techincal enough to include a photo.

One thing to figure in is that the BB engines appear to have been Cast in small Batches as the volume relative to smallblocks in passenger car applications was very small. Looking at the data in Nolands Survey from many years ago, Feb engines generally had Late December or January blocks with anywhere from a couple of days to six or more weeks between casting and engine assembly. Keep in mind, the numbers in the survey were unverified, although I have penceled some additional numberes I have verified in my book that agree with this general range.

      Brian,

I think the engine from the link has a questionable stamp, so I would not draw any conclusions from the date it represents.

The NCRS allows 6 months from casting date to vehicle assembly date. From what I have seen first-hand and researched, there is no hard and fast pattern when it comes to casting dates and assembly dates, especially for big blocks. I have seen engines just serial numbers apart with engine assembly dates that have weeks or months between them, and I have seen blocks cast months prior to engine assembly. From what I understand, there was not a first-in, first-out inventory system in place, so dates can tend to be a little random.

      Good luck,
      Joel
