    1962 Vin Tag

    Hi All,
Looking for advice/ comments about re-attaching my original vin tag to the steering column of my '62. Thanks in advance!

That's a good question, I looked in the Judging Manual, thinking I would find a quick answer for you, and could not find a thing. Seems strange that it would not be in there. Maybe it is and this old feeble mind missed it. I know the one on my 62 is rivited. Hopefully some one with more knowledge will jump in.

Judging Manuals do not typically cover details...

...like re-attaching VIN tags or re-stamping blocks... 1962 VIN tags were spot welded to the steering column slightly forward of the firewall. This was likely one of the worst placement decisions in GM history. In any case, they were never riveted to the column in '62. Many of these tags may still reside on the shoulders of some obscure roadway as the spot weld was not always perfect. If you are lucky enough to have your VIN tag, I'd ask about the typical location, 40 grit the column target area & the back of the tag, invest in some JB Weld, and have at it. You should already have the spot weld evidence. Just clean up the JB overflow & you should be good to go... A lot easier than trying to re-create some mid year trim tag...

Does that mean if a car's vin tag is rivited that points will be deducted? Seems to me that would be an important item towards originality.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you don't lose this tag.

I put a radiator hose clamp around mine.

i'd favor a minor deduct. the tag on my 61 is still spot-welded in spite of over 250K miles on it before i restored it. first thing i did when i bought it was to wrap the vin tag to the steering col jacket with a wire tie. i left the tie on all thru the judging process as i didn't trust the integrety of the spot weld. i got a couple points deducted each time on its way to the duntov. its still in place today.i'd go with the dipstick's suggestion and JB weld and also add a wire tie. i would not attemp to spot weld it back on as i'm not that good a spot welder. mike

Lost mine about 20 years ago on a trip from Defiance ,Ohio to Jacksonville Fla. Been watching the board and will go after a repo when I can get the body up high enpough to show "the man" the numbers in the frame.Don't have and never had the original engine in my tenure. According to previuos owner it developed a large hole in the side one Sat night in a exhibition of its 1/4 mile prowess. Wish I'd have realized the frail nature of the welds back then
