    date coding criteria

hello everyone. i was curious what some of the closest dates on blocks, then engine build dates, then car build date were. i have seen so many in each end of the time table. i was looking at a car to buy and the block casting was only a month from the build date of the car. block november-car december. it is curious to me if the block and heads were cast a month before the assembly of the car that they could make it down the line so quick. can anyone shed some light on this. any examples that they own and is documented for sure? thanks everyone. the professional information on this site is always appreciated.

Matthew, if you check the archives, you'll find numerous discussions regarding this. Also, on the CD that has all the past articles from the Corvette Restorer, there is an article that I did (the dating game revisited) that follows the dating of a large number of 62's--and you'll find that the dates are all over the map.

                    Re: date coding criteria

Thank you all so much for the information. i was skeptical about the engine build date only a week and a half after the block cast date, then 2 weeks before the car assy date. but i guess this is very possible as it seems many of you have dates within a week or two apart between the three. also, it is possible that the dates from the heads, intake, etc, can be a few months earlier since they were shelf items? thanks again. this site, the knowledge, and the gearheads are truly top of the line.

Yes, that is entirely possible Matthew. See the JG for detailed info.
