    1967 Exhaust Pipes/4-Speed vrs Powerglide

(I have looked in the Archives but came up empty.) I wish to install 2" (at exhaust manifold) merging to 2 1/2" front and secondary exhaust pipes back to mufflers: the post-1965 configuration for 327 engines. But my 1967 has a Powerglide transmission that calls for a 2" exhaust. Will the 2 1/2" pipes clear the transmission? If yes, is the center hanger bracket necessary and will it fit?

Won't fit. I tried it with NOS pipes in 1975 on my 67 powerglide car. The pipes are too big and hit the transmision.

Thanks Ken. I have new 2 1/2" OEM-style rear mufflers in the basement. Guess I made a mistake on that purchase unless the 2" Powerglide secondary pipes can be linked to the mufflers via an adapter.

You should be able to adapters at any auto parts store to link the 2" pipes to the 2 1/2" muffler inlets.

          Bob,
This work will be done by a muffler shop. I am sure they can do the adaptation. I was just in the process of ordering 2 1/2" exhaust pipes on-line when I thought to myself there must be something different than the diameter for the Powerglide. Thank goodness I came here before ordering!

            A Further Explanation

This is basically what I am trying to get rid of. I measured that rear pipe at 2 1/2", hence my order some time ago at that size for the mufflers. I guess we all make mistakes....

I still say you're going through a lot of effort and money to gain maybe 5 horsepower, especially if a 2 1/2 inch exhaust won't fit easily. But, that's just my opinion.

                Patrick,
I am going from the 3 1/2" chambered pipe system shown in the pic back to a stock 2" pipe system. I am not sure what your message means. How would I gain hp?

                  Paul,

If your ordering the 2" pipes from one of the usual Corvette supply houses they will have the adapters too. So you can get them at the same time your order your pipes. Then give them to your muffler shop with the pipes to install with your 2 1/2" mufflers.

                    Bob,
I checked today. Those adapters are available locally. Saves shipping and the usual brokerage nonsense bringing things into Canada from the USA.

                      Re: A Further Explanation

You mentioned previously that you wanted to change back to a stock system because you thought that with the chambered system you were losing some horsepower. My thought is, as it was a few weeks ago, that any difference is nominal in your current configuration.

If you're changing because you don't like the sound, that's another matter. I suspect then that you can sell your current system to recoup some of the money.

I just happen to like the chambered system on my 71. I've got a stock system on the 72 and they're a world different in sound.

                        Paul,

You may find that the best idea from a configuration and completeness standpoint as well as with brokerage would be to order a complete system from Corvette Central. They will have the muffler attached to the pipe, as original, and fit very well.

Any adapter used to connect a pipe to a "locally purchased muffler" is likely to be mild steel and will rust quickly.

                          Patrick,
The new 2 1/2" mufflers are from Corvette Central. I have just ordered the 2" automatic (Powerglide) exhaust pipes from them as well. I was not in proper "think" mode when I started this process to get rid of those chambered pipes but I think it will come together with inexpensive shrink adapters between the rear pipes and mufflers. Not NCRS but functional as is my car. Thanks for the input. Very much appreciated.

nice detail---i plan on doing a similar chambered set up on a bb car---remember that this is your car and if and when you go to sell sell it,tell the potential buyer if he does'nt like it he is looking at the wrong car---nice clean job---good luck
