    water pump belt on 427

the belt that i got from paragon seems a little on the loose side. does this sound right. do they tighten up as the engine revs? the first one i got was too tight. it is a 66 L72 engine, bill

Re: water pump belt on 427

    Bill,

If your talking about the captive belt on the W/P to C/S pulleys it seems to be a common problem. I had to order 3-belts with the same p/n before I got one that was the "right" length.

I ended up using a belt that measured 34.250" measured around the outside of the belt. I believe the original belts were 34.4"

The belt pretty much has to be "spot on" as there is not adjustment for the belt.

Measure your old belt and ask the folks at Paragon to measure one for you and get it exchanged.

    Good Luck.

i have run into the same problem---as in any production process there are "stack up" issues---ten thousands here and there add up quick---if you are at the outside end of a given spec. you "gm" will add a spacer to tighten up a production spec.. if you are happy with the belt and it does not make noise go with it---good luck ,phil

        bill----

It will not "tighten up" with the engine running. If anything, it will "loosen up".

Re: water pump belt on 427 pupose?

thats what i thought i guess i will order yet another belt. what concerned me as the belt listed 34.5 not 35.4 as spect out. was this a back up belt in the event the altinator belt broke?

            bill----

It serves that purpose, but I don't know if that was the designer's primary intention.
