Isn't diesel oil loaded with detergents, etc?

Besides the ZDDP, isn't the other main difference with Diesel oil that it has to contend with the relatively dirtier conditions inside a Diesel engine so it is designed with more detergents and corrosion prevention?

ZDDP is the wear additive that is needed to prevent certain types of metal failure. API rating indicates the wear package and detergent package. I stick with brand names but my little bit of wisdom tells me I might be paying extra for a pretty label and a bunch of advertisement. I believe most motor oils start from nearly the same source with the same ingredients. Then, they have further ingredients added based on the name brand. I don't use Quaker State because I recall hearing it had high sulfer and more ash than other brands. Some of this is splitting hairs. The diesel oils have the ZDDP in higher concentrations over motor oils. This is a requirement of the engine manufactures. There are also some motorcycle oils that have a lot ZDDP in it. Depending on how the engine is designed, it is somewhat of a requirement. Again, I am not an engineer. Depending on the camshaft and spring pressure. If you don't have ZDDP, you will kill the camshaft. Take care, Terry

I worked in the oil industry for 35 years and saw no instance of inappropriate behavior. Don't believe everything you see in major media.

Oil companies are like any other company, they are out to make a profit. Before you talk about "obscene" profit you should look into the risks they take and the cost of getting petroleum products to market.

The average cost of the first producing well in a new reservoir now exceeds $250,000,000 (two hundred fifty million dollars). That money has to come from someplace and a bank sure will not loan it on such a HIGH risk project.

The cost of gas at the pump fluctuates mostly because of speculators (not oil companies) in the spot oil market who run the price of crude up with any perceived threat any place in the world.
