    Rear Hub

I am trying to change the rear bearings on my 71 vette. It appears that there is rivits that are holding everything together. Do I just drill them out?? thanks Tyler

The only rivets that there are that you have to deal with Tyler are the rivets that hold the rotor to the spindle.

After removing the half shaft flange, the spindle will need to be either pressed or driven out of the support as it's all pressed together

Keep in mind that before you take a hammer to the end of the spindle, that there are tools made specifically to thread onto the spindle end so that no damage occurs while your striking it. This isn't the best way to get the spindle apart, but it doe's work, it's just a really violent way to get the deal done.

Tyler you need to search the archives and read how the rear wheel bearings are assembled. This repair is not as simple as replacing the front wheel bearings. I believe that flat rate labor was 5.7 hours using the proper tools. Can take considerably longer without the tools. Depending on your expertise you might want to consider sending the hub assembly to a vendor like Bair's for rebuilding.

        Tyler,

I did mine myself but it was a pain in the butt and even at that I had the local corvette shop set up my end play for me. If you have lots of time to tinker and really want to do it yourself then read up on it in the archives and go for it. Other wise it's good advice to have someone that has done it and has the tooling to do it for you.

Tyler the rivets retaining the brake disc to the spindle were put there for a purpose and the rear wheel bearings on your 71 can be serviced leaving the brake disc rivetted to the spindle. If you sent your assembly to a professional like Bairs, they would not remove the brake disc from the spindle. Infact Bairs offers the service of rivetting the brake discs to spindles and then truing the assembly. If you do remove the rivets and separate the pieces you may create a problem, one result is the pumping of air into the rear calipers and loosing brakes on the rear. The biggest Chevy dealership in Dallas sure screwed up my brakes with separating the brake discs doing warranty work on my 1970, Bairs fixed my problem with rivetting the discs to the spindles and truing both sides. Magically the brake problems were gone.
